Summer in the City
To produce this series I walked along Ste-Catherine Street in Montreal on a warm day, holding my camera at hip level and clicking the shutter without looking through the viewfinder. I wanted that feeling of being part of the crowd, jostled shoulder to shoulder.

It's a five-minute snapshot. The shoppers are young, mostly in pairs, carrying bags with brand logos, looking upbeat, relaxed, in their element.

I wanted to keep the paintings gestural and loose to capture the energy and movement of the crowd. I used an under-drawing and built up layers of transparent acrylic glazes in vibrant colours, sometimes scratching through them in a sgraffito technique to reveal the layers below.
